SUPER SUMMER DAYS OUT 2017

Whether you are planning a staycation this summer or visiting our district for the very first time, we’ve found some fantastic days out to keep you busy. From activities for the kids and outdoor adventures to fun in the river and sea, we’ve chosen 10 super days out across our district for you to enjoy. All you have to do is to pack a picnic and sample what our district has to offer.


1. A VINTAGE DAY OUT - FIRLE

Firle Vintage Fair is a fun day out for the whole family. Here you can enjoy a vintage funfair, dancing, hundreds of stalls selling antiques and vintage goodies, vintage cars and a wide range of top quality food and drink. This year the festival will be offering overnight camping and evening entertainment. If you would like to arrive in style, you can catch the double decker, route master bus from Lewes Bus Station.

2. GET ARTY - CHARLESTON

If you are visiting Charleston, former home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant they are offering free activities for families on the first Sunday of the month. Some of Charleston’s fantastic volunteers will be on hand to help encourage and inspire your little artists. From paper lampshades to clay models, activities are designed to be suitable for all ages and have been inspired by the art and lives of the Bloomsbury group.  Parents or carers must stay with their children, and are encouraged to create artworks together as a family.

3. LET THE KIDS RUN WILD - DITCHLING

This year the Outdoors Project are running several holiday clubs at Mac’s Farm in Ditchling. Your kids can choose to learn all about camp craft,  attend HARRY POTTER DAY with Quidditch, wand carving, spell and potion making or play Minecraft in the Wild. This is a great way to get the kids off their screens to spend the day running around in the great outdoors.

4. PITCH A TENT - BARCOMBE

We’ll let you into a secret, we have some of the best camping and glamping in the UK. One of our favourites is the Secret Campsite near Barcombe, perfect for pitching a tent in a secluded location that is full of wildlife and close to the River Ouse. Here you are invited to enjoy campfires, wildlife, spacious pitches, secluded meadows and great showers. If you don’t want to pitch a tent you can hire one of their secret shelters designed by a local inventor and designer.

5. VISIT A VINEYARD - RODMELL

Breaky Bottom is an isolated farmstead set in a beautiful secluded valley in the South Downs about 5 miles from Lewes town.  There are six acres of vines and a flock of 40 ewes graze the surrounding steep banks. To sample their dry white and sparkling wines you can arrange a visit by appointment with the owner.

6. GET CRAFTY - DITCHLING

If you are visiting Ditchling, their highly acclaimed museum of Arts & Craft is well worth a visit. They also run children’s craft workshops including a puppet making workshop in August. Kids get to make their own ‘rod-puppet’ from everyday materials and decorate them with ribbons, jewels and much, much more.

7. HAVE FUN ON THE RIVER - BARCOMBE

As well as a stunning coastline, we also have the timeless and meandering River Ouse snaking through our district. If you like a paddle up stream, why not hire a kayak and wile away an afternoon with the swans as you observe the cattle grazing on the riverbank.

8. ENJOY A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM - LEWES CASTLE

Come and watch one of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies performed in the magical setting of Lewes’ Norman castle.  This much loved local company returns with an eccentric take on this Shakespeare classic with a twist. Audiences will discover a magical and imaginative production of the perfect summer Shakespeare.

9. A DIP IN THE SEA - SEAFORD

Situated a short walk from Seaford train station and close to cafes and shops, Seaford beach is a great place to visit for a fresh blast of sea air or a quick play on the stones. Peppered with brightly painted beach huts and a couple of seafront cafes, the beachfront is unadulterated seaside fun.

10. CORN COB CAPERS - NR. KINGSTON

Spring Barn Farm invite you to get lost this summer and find your way out of their giant Maize Maze! Meet silly Milly McSpreader and hop on the trailer ride around the farm where you can spot the animals and hear Milly’s best corny jokes. Here you will find farm animals as well as rabbits and llamas, an indoor play barn and bouncy jumping pillows.
